Speed Queen’s Four Vane Agitator

in Washing Machines

 The Agitator

In the Speed Queen AWNA62 Washer, the agitator has a 210 degree wash stroke. That means the agitator turns in a 210 degree arc before reversing back the other way another 210 degrees. This is the longest arc in the industry and this coupled with 68 strokes per minute gives you a unique wash action. The polypropylene agitator has four vanes or fins shaped to give a smooth rotating action to the clothes. The design of these vanes not only causes the clothing which is floating in the water to move back and forth. The action and shape of the agitator also causes the clothing to move up the out side of the bowl of water, then gradually across the top of the water and then drawn down through the water next to the agitator. This movement through the water with a good detergent will lift the dirt and grime out of the clothing.

It is important when starting the machine to select the appropriate water level for the amount of clothing in the load. In some high efficiency machines there is not enough water in the bowl and the agitator is just dragging back forth across the clothes and not actually washing the clothes. This will also cause extra wearing and damage to clothing. That is why it is important even in your new Speed Queen Washer to choose the correct water level for your load.

A couple tips to check this are:

  • Open the lid after the machine has started washing and push down on the clothing. If when you push down on the clothes and you can’t push the clothing under the water, there is not enough water in there for the clothes to move freely. If this is the case you will either have to reset the pressure switch and add more water or remove some of the clothing. Of course you could go over board and have too little clothing in the bowl for the amount of water. That is not being efficient.
  • The second check is to open the lid and check which clothing is floating on top, then close the lid and let the machine wash for a couple minutes. Then lift the lid again, if there are different clothing now floating on top you will know the clothes are circulating.

After you have used the machine for a few loads, you will get use to the water level required for a certain sized load. For more on How to use the AWNA62 Washer click here.

Fabric Softener Despensor   On top of the agitator is the fabric softener despensor. The despensor works the same as it does on every other top loading washing machine. While loading the machine add the appropriate amount of softener according to manufacture instructions and then top up the despensor with warm water to the level indicated on the despensor. The fabric softener will sit in the despensor cup until the first spin. The centrifugal force of the agitator spinning with the bowl will cause the softener to the out side container of the despensor. Once the machine stops spinning, the softener will drain into the rising deep rinse water. When the rinse water has reached the correct level the agitator will start and the fabric softener will disperse through the rinse water.
